The development and neuropsychobiology of empathy are reviewed. Multiple factors contributing to empathy deficit disorder are considered. The resulting perspective of a complex phenomenon should help improve the human condition and our relationships with, and treatment of, fellow human and other sentient beings. A collaborative approach involving diverse professional disciplines with various points of view seems to be needed in order to adequately encompass the complexity.
